TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK
The focal point of a vast black landscape is the Islote de Hilario volcano. Buses take you around the park to see the extraordinary striated rock formations. At the summit, there is a restaurant designed by César Manrique, where meat and fish are cooked on a grill using heat coming up from inside the volcano. You can also go on a camel safari around the park, starting from the village of Yaiza.
CÉSAR MARIQUE FOUNDATION
Cesar Manrique’s home, built into the boulders in a lava field, is now a foundation dedicated to his life and work. The ground floor is an exhibition space with works by his renowned contemporaries, including Tàpies, Millares, Picasso and Saura, but it is the view framed by the huge windows that draws the eye. Basalt steps lead down to a turquoise pool and five lava bubbles linked by passages in the volcanic rock. Visit this foundation first to get an idea of what Manrique is all about, and you’ll get more out of his other creations on the island.
This tiny island off the north tip of Lanzarote has no roads, just fabulous beaches and a handful of idyllic waterside fish restaurants. Good for cycling and hiking if you are feeling energetic. Take the ferry from Orzola (lineasromero.com)
Founded in the 15th century, the little town of Teguise in the centre was the original capital of Lanzarote. Handsome colonial mansions line the cobbled streets, which lead off the Plaza de San Miguel, where there is a busy market on Sundays. The Convento de San Francisco dates back to the end of the 16th century, while the Convento de Santo Domingo was built about a century later.
Famara, in the north-west of the island, backed by dramatic cliffs and exposed to the Atlantic wind, is a fabulous beach for watersports, with excellent conditions for surfing, we offer private surf lessons right from your doorstep. Our surf instructors are widely renowned for their expertquality tuition - and its tremendous fun too!
DIVING THE UNDERWATER MUSEUM
Museo Atlántico, an underwater museum featuring more than 300 sculptural works by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor. The installations can be found 14 metres beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in Bahía de Las Coloradas (Coloradas Bay), on the south coast of Lanzarote. We recommend doing a toured dive Lanzarote Dive College for the full experience.
Lanzarote is becoming a more and more popular destination for active tourists. Perhaps it's the lunar landscape. Come on and do the moonwalk on your Canarian holiday and try one of the many hikes available here on Lanzarote, whether you prefer stunning beach views, or would like to walk the crater of a volcano the choice is yours!
VOLCANIC WINE TASTING AT LA GERIA
La Geria is one of those places that you should not miss on your visit to the island. La Geria is one of the most unique and distinctive places on the island of Lanzarote. On a scenario drenched in Timanfaya volcanic ash are a number of vineyards in a few holes dug in the ashes. In addition to its large landscaped and ethnographic value, for wine lovers it is a must to visit these bodegas , some of which offer guided tours and tastings of their wines in a wine and history bathed space.
CUEVA DE LOS VERDES
Visiting La Cueva de los Verdes is truly a journey into the bowels of the ground, an spectacular and unique experience. The tunnel formed by the Corona Volcano is one of the most extensive and interesting planet. Along their journey, there are at least sixteen Jameos (opening or mouth area that allows access to different caves). More than six miles preface acquaintances from the crater of the volcano until it enters the sea in an underwater section of a mile called "Tunnel of Atlantis."
